Auckland’s Rug Cleaning & Restoration Specialists

About The Rug Guru: Auckland’s specialist rug care service provider, a master rug restorer with over 34 years of hands-on experience working with Persian, Oriental, silk, wool, and antique rugs. Every rug is treated as a unique handmade textile with cultural, historical, and structural value—not simply a floor covering.

Our approach is preservation-focused and restoration-led where necessary. We aim to retain original fibres, respect traditional craftsmanship, and recommend only the level of treatment required to protect the rug’s long-term condition and value.

Rather than applying standardised solutions, every rug is individually assessed based on its age, fibre condition, construction, dye stability, and overall structural integrity.

Meet Hamid – Founder & Master Rug Restorer

Hamid began his training in Iran, working within traditional rug weaving and restoration environments where craftsmanship is rooted in generations of practical knowledge and skill. Through this process, he developed specialist expertise in knot structures, natural dye behaviour, fibre ageing, and traditional repair techniques. After relocating to New Zealand, he continued working extensively with antique rugs, private collectors, interior specialists, and trade clients. Since then, his work has centred on the careful restoration and preservation of handmade textiles requiring technical precision and considered intervention. Over the past three decades, Hamid has assessed and restored thousands of rugs, ranging from everyday handmade pieces to fragile heirloom and antique textiles. His guiding principles remain consistent:
  • Preserve original structure wherever possible
  • However, avoid unnecessary restoration or replacement
  • Respect traditional weaving techniques
  • Therefore, prioritise durability and structural stability over cosmetic appearance
  • Intervene only where it improves long-term integrity
Hamid believes that many handmade rugs can be preserved for future generations when restoration is approached carefully, respectfully, and with a clear understanding of how the rug was originally made.

Preservation-First Philosophy

Every rug is assessed individually before any recommendations are made. Our approach is based on:
  • Minimum intervention wherever practical
  • Fibre-safe and textile-safe treatment methods
  • Respect for original weaving techniques
  • Structural stability before appearance
  • Long-term preservation over short-term cosmetic results
No two rugs receive identical treatment. Each restoration plan is determined by the rug’s materials, construction, condition, and specific areas of damage.
