Rug Washing Auckland

Hand washing Persian rugs in Auckland using conservation-grade rug cleaning techniques at The Rug Guru workshop

Expert Hand Washing for Persian, Oriental & Handmade Rugs

Protecting valuable rugs across Auckland for over 34 years with specialist hand washing designed for Persian, Oriental, antique, silk, wool, and handmade rugs.

Unlike general rug cleaning methods, rug washing is a full immersion, rinse-based textile process designed specifically for handmade rugs. It removes deep fibre contamination while protecting natural dyes, knot structure, and long-term textile integrity.

Every rug is individually assessed before washing based on fibre type, age, construction, dye stability, wear patterns, and structural condition.

Why Rug Washing Is Different From General Cleaning

Handmade rugs require a different approach from standard carpet cleaning. Unlike surface extraction methods, professional rug washing uses a controlled full-immersion and rinse process, designed specifically for dense woven textiles. This ensures deep cleaning while protecting your rug’s structure, fibres, and colours.

Professional rug washing delivers multiple benefits:

  • Deep removal of embedded dirt, dust, oils, and allergens
  • Complete rinsing of cleaning agents and residues
  • Preservation of natural dye stability and colour vibrancy
  • Protection of knot structure, weave integrity, and fibre resilience
  • Restoration of softness and overall texture
  • Improved hygiene, particularly for homes with children and pets
  • Extended rug lifespan through careful fibre care

This process is essential for Persian, Oriental, silk, wool, antique, and other handmade rugs, where structural preservation is critical.

Specialised Rug Washing by Material

  • Wool Rugs – preserves natural lanolin, softness, and fibre resilience
  • Silk Rugs – ultra-low moisture handling for delicate fibre protection
  • Cotton Rugs – controlled deep fibre cleaning for stable yarn structure
  • Jute Rugs – fibre-safe cleaning focused on structural integrity
  • Sisal Rugs – controlled cleaning to reduce fraying and surface wear
  • Viscose Rugs – low-agitation cleaning to reduce fibre distortion and discolouration risk
  • Wool & Silk Blends – balanced fibre treatment for mixed-material stability

Rug Washing Limitations

Not all rugs are suitable for full immersion washing.

Most tufted rugs with synthetic latex backing may be unsuitable due to risk of structural separation under prolonged moisture exposure.

Where immersion washing is not appropriate, alternative surface-safe or specialist dry treatments are recommended after assessment.

Specialist Rug Care Services

About Hamid – Master Rug Restorer

The Rug Guru is led by Hamid, a master rug restorer with over 34 years of hands-on experience in handmade rug care and restoration.

He began training in Iran within traditional weaving and restoration environments, developing deep technical knowledge of knot structures, natural dye behaviour, fibre ageing, and repair techniques.

After relocating to New Zealand, he continued working with collectors, antique rugs, and high-value handmade textiles, focusing on long-term preservation rather than surface cleaning.

His guiding principles:

  • Preserve original structure wherever possible
  • Avoid unnecessary restoration or alteration
  • Respect traditional weaving techniques
  • Prioritise structural durability over appearance
  • Intervene only where it improves long-term integrity

We treat each rug as a valuable heirloom, carefully restoring and preserving it safely for generations to enjoy.
